Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to create positive outcomes in your relationships with others and with yourself. It involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ emotions, to discriminate among them and to use the information to guide one’s thinking and actions.
Time and again we have been told to control emotions as they make us less effective. Nothing can be further from reality. What we need to control is not emotions, but actions, especially when dealing with conflict or crises. One way of doing this is through self-talk. Self-talk is a mechanism to mentally explore multiple options and viewpoints. It is a conversation within oneself, and involves listening to that inner voice.
