Guanidine is a useful drug for restoring normal rhythm in selected cases of cardiac arrhythmia, particularly atria fibrillation, and for the prevention of recurrent attacks. Its administration in doses large enough to restore normal rhythm is not without risk. This risk is slight in experienced hands when the patient is under close observation, preferably with facilities for electrocardiographic control. For this reason treatment with large doses should rarely be undertaken in general practice.
